On Tuesday, Edmondson Village and the nearby communities of Lower Edmondson
Village, Edgewood and Lyndhurst kicked off a $1,000,000 investment project to
improve the look, feel and safety of streets throughout those neighborhoods.
As plans continue for the Red Line on Edmondson Avenue, communities along
this major artery will soon be able to enjoy new street lighting and several
rebuilt sidewalks.

The project, funded 100% by federal stimulus dollars, will be led by Baltimore
City Department of Transportation based on strong input from neighborhood
leaders. Over the course of eight months, 136 old rusted steel and cast iron
street light poles and fixtures will be replaced with new aluminum pedestrian
street light poles.

When complete, Edmondson Village neighborhoods will be more pleasant places
to walk – making them more inviting and improving the quality of life for residents.
"These kinds of improvements will help get our neighborhood ready for the
Red Line,"
said Monique Washington, President of Edmondson Village Community
Association and neighborhood advocate. "New street lights will make our
community safer. And our seniors and families will be thankful for better
sidewalks making it easier for them to get around."

This project represents a big step towards meeting one of the central goals in the
Red Line Community Compact – to make neighborhood improvements now, even
before the Red Line is built. This project has also involved the community from
the start – beginning in April 2009, a neighborhood walk-through was held with
community leaders in this area to inform them and gain input about project plans.
