Baltimore delegation heads
to Rail~Volution conference

This week, twenty-six leaders from Baltimore
neighborhoods and city government are heading
to Boston for the annual Rail~Volution conference. Rail~Volution is a forum that ties together publictransit and land use with the goal of creating more equitable communities.

The theme of this year’s event could not be more relevant for the Red Line: Building Livable Communities through Transit has been the city’s mission from the very beginning and is embodied in the Red Line Community Compact.

The goals? For members from Baltimore City communities and city employees to come back with the tools to adopt innovative approaches to building the Red Line–and all the other development that will happen around it. For community leaders to have both the knowledge and the capacity to help their communities plan for the future. And for everyone to use these strategies to work together to make the best Red Line possible.
Through case studies and workshops, participants will hear from planners and community organizers how projects like the Red Line were developed in other cities. They will attend sessions on best practices and listen to transportation and policy leaders outline an aggressive agenda for transit planning in the 21st century. Other session topics include ways to boost the economy through investments in infrastructure, public-private partnerships, green jobs, and climate change.
They won’t just be sitting, either. The Baltimore team will also get to see firsthand how transit can shape a city. Through “mobile workshops”, they will tour local transportation-oriented developments (TODs) and see examples of neighborhoods that have been restored through better transit and affordable housing.
Plus, Baltimore will be sharing its own model for active public engagement. The Community Compact is a unique initiative that has proven to bring communities together in new ways and with new energy. It represents a shift in how the city does business. Danyell Diggs, the city’s Red Line Coordinator, will give a presentation on the development of the Compact and the ways the city has begun to implement its goals.
