Over the summer, we told you about the upcoming formation of Red Line Station
Area Advisory Committees (SAACs). The members represent neighborhoods, civic
groups, businesses, and religious groups near the Red Line, with a single goal to
make sure that each station meets the needs of the community. This month, MTA
launched the SAACs by holding a summit for SAAC members to discuss transit-
oriented development and community-planning for the area immediately around the
stations. They called it "New Links Baltimore: Red Line Stations Taking Communities
to New Places".

Speakers from Massachusetts, New Jersey, North Carolina and Oregon gave
presentations about how to make stations safe, friendly, and connected to
neighborhoods. They also showed examples of projects gone wrong and how to
avoid the same mistakes in Baltimore. Over the next 15 months, SAACs will use
this information to design stations that are more than just a light rail stop. Our
goal is to build stations that represent design excellence coupled with thorough
community input to create places that communities can be proud of.

Even if you don't live along the Red Line route, we would like to hear about what
you wish to see at future Red Line stations and the area around them. Please take
our quick poll and let us know what is most important to you. We will pass the
results on to each of the SAACs so they will know what issues you care about
and what kind of development you would like to see along the Red Line.
